How CitiBusiness®/AAdvantage® Platinum Select® MasterCard® Compares to AdCard for Facebook Ads.

Written by: Zach Johnson

You’d think a card with a name like  CitiBusiness®/AAdvantage® Platinum Select® MasterCard® would have a list of benefits at least as long as its name.

And according to a reviewer at Nav, it does.  At least, if you’re an American Airlines AAdvantage points junkie.

Snag 65,000 AAdvantage Miles as an Intro Bonus

If you’re a faithful American Airlines traveler and earning points toward future air travel is your thing, this may be the business credit card for you.

You can rake in its generous 65,000 bonus mile intro bonus after spending $4,000 in purchases within the first 4 months of opening your account.

If you spend that four grand on American Airlines tickets, the 2 miles for every $1 you spend on airfare will deposit another 8,000 AAdvantage miles into your account.

You’ll also earn 2 AAdvantage miles for every $1 you spend on stuff you buy at telecommunications merchants, cable and satellite providers, car rental companies, and gas stations.  You’ll get 1 mile for everything else you buy and pay no Foreign Transaction Fees for purchases made outside of the United States.

The intro bonus combined with the $99 annual fee waived for the first 12 months, might make this card worth using for at least a year.

Enjoy additional savings and preferential treatment for American Airlines.

For longer domestic trips on American Airlines where you can’t get away with just a carry-on, your card will let you, and up to four people traveling with you, check your first bag free.  Unfortunately, you and your team will have to pay full boat on all the bags you check if you schedule that weeklong company retreat in Bali instead of San Francisco.

If you’re someone who likes to use your flight time to knock out some work, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll save 25% on inflight Wi-Fi when you use your card.  Plus, you’ll also enjoy preferred boarding every time you fly American.

Another perk is that you can earn a $99 domestic economy fare American Airlines Companion Ticket when you spend $30,000 or more on eligible purchases.  Of course, if you’re spending that amount or more a month on Facebook or Google ads, you’ll have AAdvantage miles out the wazoo which will let any companions you bring along sit in First Class “for free” with you.

The downsides of using this card to buy Facebook and Google ads are pretty significant

In addition to the absolutely insane cash advance rate of 25.24% and the cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the cash advance amount, whichever is greater, the drawbacks for advertisers using the card to buy tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in ads each month makes it a no-go on a lot of levels.

Stingy Credit Limits

The biggest and most important is going to be the credit limit -- which you’re probably going to bump up against within the first week of buying ads. Even if the ads are making money hand over fist, paying off the card every few days is a pain you don’t want to inflict on even your least-liked admin.

Account Ban Vulnerability

If you and your media buyers are using this card to buy ads on all your accounts and Facebook or Google bans one, they ALL get shut down and your whole enterprise comes to a screeching halt.

Pointless Points

Even if you’re a travel addict, you only have so much time to spend hundreds of thousands of miles traveling to.  Plus: Global pandemic.  Using points for business travel for you and your team can be a big money saver.  Except: Zoom calls.

Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate the business credit cards you’re using to buy Facebook and Google ads to determine whether they’re giving you the kind of rewards and services that can help you scale.
